Telling a story through the medium of photography is very important to me, I need to engage, not only with the moment in which I take a photograph, but also with its depiction of the passing of the seasons, the memories of past cultures, the spirit of the place and historical events. Photography gives me the opportunity to look at everything in the real world and embrace it as a potential subject.

It is important to me to become in some metaphysical way a part of what I am photographing, become part of the spirit of the place.

As a visual artist I often deal in symbols, objects and mark making, narratives are also important in my work. Ordinary objects can become dynamic when given extra attention and significance and can emit a great deal of visual energy. I become excited by instantaneous and impulsive marks made by flaking paint, rusting objects, discarded clothing, iron ore dust and human traces, things not usually associated with having aesthetic qualities.

For the viewer to become infected by the feelings I felt and to enter into a kind of relationship with my work means that I have succeeded in creating what I set out to do, prove that photography can be art.

I hope my work gets beneath peoples defences and captures things that connect us all, emotion, after all it’s not about the photograph it’s about the reason behind it.
